An SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) server is a server that uses the SMTP protocol to send and receive e-mail. SMTP is a standard protocol for transferring e-mail over the Internet. Its main function is to send messages from client mail agents (MUAs) to mail servers and between mail servers themselves.
What the SMTP server is for:
Sending e-mail: The primary role of the SMTP server is to accept e-mails from client mail agents (such as Outlook, Gmail, etc.) and forward them to the receiving server.
Email Routing: The SMTP server determines the best route to send the email to the recipient by communicating with other SMTP servers.
Queue Management: If it cannot deliver the message immediately, the SMTP server queues it and continues to attempt delivery for a specified period of time.
Verification and verification: SMTP servers often use authentication and verification mechanisms to prevent spam and abuse.
Error reports: In case the email cannot be delivered, the SMTP server returns an error message to the sender with information about the reason for the failure.
How the SMTP server works:
Connection initiation: When you send an email, your client mail agent establishes a connection with the SMTP server via TCP/IP.
Transferring the message: The SMTP server accepts the message and performs the necessary checks (such as authentication and formatting).
Forwarding the message: Once the message is received, the SMTP server forwards it to the next SMTP server on the way to the final destination.
Termination of connection: After the successful transmission of the message, the connection is closed.
SMTP servers are an essential component of the e-mail infrastructure and play a key role in e-mail communication. Without them, sending and receiving e-mail would be impossible.
